Round Lake, Minnesota Judges of the Mid-American Wine Competition have named Round Lake Vineyards & Winery’s 2015 Marquette “best red” at the July contest. The winery’s 2015 Drake was also considered for the title, while its Brianna 2015 was a noted contender for best dry white. All nine wines submitted by Round Lake Vineyards & Winery medaled during the contest, which judges wines of the Midwest for their ability to complement a food pairing.

“Medaling in this competition is a special distinction for us,” said Scott Ellenbecker, owner of Round Lake Vineyards & Winery. “It not only judges our wines against other wines but also demonstrates their rich assets paired with carefully selected dishes.”

Held each year in Ankeny, Iowa, the Mid-American Wine Competition is the first in the United States to offer this format. Chief Judge Doug Frost said, “Typically competitions judge wines only against other wines, and typically the biggest wine wins. But wine is supposed to be consumed with food. By judging the wines in a setting more receptive to wines of balance, and by judging the wine with food, we think we will see a different outcome than the usual ‘bigger is better’ response.”

Ellenbecker said, “Being selected best of the best is truly a great honor. It underscores what our customers have been telling us along – these wines aren’t just great by themselves but they take their place on the table as part of a complete food experience.”

Wines medaling at the Mid-American contest were:

  • The Drake – Gold
  • Marquette Reserve – Gold
  • Brianna – Gold
  • The Gander – Silver
  • Zinfandel – Bronze
  • La Crescent – Bronze
  • Frontenac Gris – Bronze
  • Cruisin Wild – Bronze
  • Cruisin Red – Bronze
